honoring Jan
Tamarya Hulme Speaking for Jan Chafee from the long standing view of a friendship of 32 years. Recognizing her efforts, hard work and delightful presence while building the Chapel Use Program. When the National Park Service gave the Chaffees the keys on a handshake on March 1996, the Chapel was completely empty and the new Park was like a ghost town. Jan and Paul had a vision and began the Chapel Use program and with true faith and hard work, began breathing life back into the Chapel. Trusting their vision, Jan swept out the cobwebs, bought furniture and furnishings, drafted the use contracts, took photos, produced brochures and advertising, set up the phone system, planted and tended the garden, hired the hosts, wrote their guidelines, set up the accounting systems, and managed and booked the Chapel with mainly weddings but also had memorials, concerts, graduations, benefits, and scores of interfaith meetings and gatherings. Many months the bookings went up to 30 paying events a month. What really impresses me is not that she did all of this but rather how she was as she accomplished everything. Jan possesses true kindness, a keen intelligence, a ferocious appreciation for life. Her delightful laughter is an inseparable part of her being. She has been my role model for many years. She is the standard to which I hold myself. I am pleased to honor Jan and speak for her.
